The Dream Machine

The Dream Machine is a performance resulting from the activity of the Laboratório do Desconhecimento (Unknowness Laboratory), around the theme of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and presented in the event Dormir bem, Envelhecer melhor (Sleep well, Age better), on World Sleep Day.

The Unknowness Laboratory is a research and creation initiative aiming to tackle scientific challenges with an interdisciplinary team of artists and scientists. The main premise is to face unresolved scientific questions by using artistic tools, techniques and perspectives, and attempt to eventually reach some progress or enlightening concerning these questions, and evaluate the process as well as any possible advantages arising from this interdisciplinary aproach.

The first topic approached in this context was the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). A group of artists from Marionet and of scientists from UC’s Center for Neurociences and Celular Biology (CNC) have gathered regularly to discuss the theme, and some results from these meetings have been shared publicly.

One of these moments of sharing will happen on World Sleep Day. We will be presenting a performance resulting from the Unknowness Lab’s activity around OSAS. We called it “The Dream Machine”.

Participating team in the Lab’s sessions on OSAS:

Ana Rita Álvaro (neurosciences researcher)

Francisca Moreira (photographer, producer)

Laetitia Gaspar (neurosciences researcher)

Marcelo dos Reis (musician)

Mário Montenegro (actor, playwright)

Pedro Andrade (plastic artist)

Teresa Girão (scientific communicator)

Unkownness Lab is a Marionet initiative together with Centro de Neurociências e Biologia Celular da Universidade de Coimbra (CNC – Center for Neuroscience and Celular Biology), with collaboration from Laboratório de Investigação e Práticas Artísticas (LIPA – Investigation and Artistic Practices’ Laboratory) and Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV), and supported by Direcção-Geral das Artes (DGArtes).
