Event of the Unknown 2018

Event of the Unknown 2018 had its first edition on September 28th in that year’s European Night of Researchers. The first topic addressed in Event of the Unknown 2018 was Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome, a respiratory disturbance marked by respiratory stops during sleep – apneas – with variable duration and frequency.

This event is one of the visible results of the Laboratório do Desconhecimento / Unknownness Lab, a research and creation initiative aimed at tackling scientific challenges with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and artists. The base premise is to face unresolved scientific questions by using artistic tools, techniques and perspectives, to try and eventually achieve some progress or enlightening concerning those questions, as well as evaluate the process and any possible advantage arising from this interdisciplinary approach. It is composed by two kinds of moment: “inner” sessions focused on discussing and experimening/creating by the participating multidisciplinary teams; and public events, in which the questions under discussion and the results of research are presented.

Laboratório do Desconhecimento / Unknownness Lab is an initiative by Marionet, together with Centro de Neurociências e Biologia Celular na Universidade de Coimbra (CNC – Centre for Neuroscience and Celular Biology), LIPA – Laboratório de Investigação e Práticas Artísticas (Laboratory for Artistic Research and Practices) and Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV), with support from Direção-Geral das Artes (DGArtes – General Bureau for the Arts).
