UnLab is a research and creation initiative that aims at approaching scientific challenges with and interdisciplinary team of scientists and artists. The main premisse is to tackle unresolved scientific issues by using artistic tools, tecniques and perspectives, and trying to eventually reach, some progress or enlightenment concerning those issues, evaluating the process and any possible advantages arising from this interdisciplinary approach.

The Lab is composed of two distinctive moments: “inner” sessions for discussion and experimentation/creation on the part of the multidisciplinary participating teams; and public events, in which the issues tackled are discussed and the results of the research are presented.

Yearly, in the context of the European Researchers’ Night, we will organize an Event of the Unknown which will express artistically and/or scientifically the confrontation with the unknowns discussed in the UnLab.

The first topic we have worked on was the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

The first Event of the Unknown, which is to take place on September 28th, 2018, in the European Researchers’ Night, will be inspired on that theme and will be held in TAGV’s Sala B, behind the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra’s Cafeteria.

O Laboratório do Desconhecimento/Unkownness Lab is an initiative by Marionet in partnership with the Centre for Neuroscience and Celular Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC), the Laboratory for Artistic Research and Practices (LIPA) and Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV), with support from Direcção-Geral das Artes (General Directory for the Arts – DGArtes).

Participating team in the Laboratory’s sessions on the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome:

Ana Rita Álvaro (researcher in neurosciences)

Francisca Moreira (photographer, producer)

Laetitia Gaspar (researcher in neurosciences)

Marcelo dos Reis (musician)

Mário Montenegro (actor, playwright)
